Recognising Toxic People: 3 Practical Tips for Protecting Your Well-Being

Toxic people are those whose behaviour regularly drains your energy, lowers your confidence, or disturbs your peace of mind. They can show up at work, among friends, or in families, making life more stressful than it needs to be. Spotting them early helps you set healthy boundaries and protect your mental health.

Here are three practical tips to help you identify toxic people:

1. Pay Attention to Consistent Negativity
Toxic people usually have a negative attitude. They might complain a lot, ignore positive ideas, or always point out problems. If someone often brings you down, makes you feel worse after talking to them, or rarely celebrates your successes, consider this a warning sign. Remember, the problem is with them, not you.

2. Look for Manipulative or Controlling Behaviour
Manipulation is a common sign of toxic behaviour. This might look like guilt-tripping, gaslighting, or trying to control what you do. If you feel pushed to go against what’s best for you, or if someone keeps ignoring your boundaries, you could be dealing with a toxic person. Trust your gut if something feels off. If you feel less like yourself around them, try to spend less time with them.

3. Notice How You Feel After Interactions
How you feel after being with someone can tell you a lot. If you often feel tired, anxious, or worse about yourself after seeing a certain person, that’s a sign. If some relationships leave you feeling drained rather than supported, it may be time to reflect on their role in your life.

Keep in mind:
It’s not always easy to spot toxic people, but if you pay attention to negativity, manipulation, and your own feelings, you can protect your emotional health. Remember, setting boundaries is not selfish, it’s important for your well-being. You also have the choice about who you spend time with.

You deserve respect, you deserve better!

Know that you are made for better! Value your inner peace and guard it like it is the Holy Grail, because really, it is.

Your friend for the journey,

Grief is a universal language that we all speak.

Grief is an emotion and sad feeling that the whole of humanity can connect with. We can all agree that at some stage in our lives we have lost somebody we loved, or somebody close to us. We can all understand that deep sadness that grief leaves behind and agree that we feel shock, disbelief and sadness.
